"REVELATIONS"

Since 2009, as well as continuing to undertake "traditional" portrait commissions, Graham has been developing a new way of presenting a portrait, inspired by his work with performance poets, which he has termed a "Revelation".

The concept is to combine the animation of a developing image, from blank canvas through to finished painting, together with an audio track. These are manipulated and fused together, creating an engaging and stimulating product.

The examples below represent Graham experimenting with different subjects and ways of pushing the concept forwards. (See "projects" page for more "Revelations")

GRAHAM NORTON

This represents another step forward technically in that it's a pastel drawing that is being produced, revealed using a combination of techniques at the video editing stage. It's not an official work as such, rather it's just another experiment that shows further potential of the "Revelations" concept.

CELEBRITY PORTRAIT INTERVIEW

This is Graham's attempt at turning his "Revelations" technique into a tv pilot. Here the method enables the painting's development to be seen throughout and within the length of a standard half-hour show. (Click the thumbnail to go to the video page...)

SHOCK

This is the simpler version of a video produced for the band "Glass Robots". They're a new two-piece group who're currently in the process of being signed and launched. It's all very exciting.

THE ACT OF LOOKING

This is the product of Graham's first commissioned public "Revelation", produced to commemorate the Barber Institute's first Writer in Residence, Philip Monks. For more information click the following link: MORE...

ROSIE

Here Graham has worked with a different kind of musical accompaniment and a more complex method of embedding the animation. He's also begun exploring video and sound effects to enhance the overall look of the product.

OLYMPICCY

The "Revelation" here plays a more supporting role in the overall short. Initially Graham was trying to show the technique in as brief a way as possible, hence the 10sec hundred metres, but he couldn't resist putting it into context.

POLARBEAR ON A WALL

This time Graham has transposed one of his Midlands Performance Poets "Revelations" onto a wall in a video with the white canvas background removed. The image therefore develops as though painted directly onto the wall - a test case that will open up new possibilities with his Poets series and beyond.

LOVE PAINTING VIDEO

...OK, so here it is: in this "Revelation" Graham has incorporated the previous animation into a video setting. With this new technique he intends to investigate further possibilities along these lines.

LOVE PAINTING

Featuring San Francisco-based singer Alice Tong and set to her song "love painting", this "Revelation" is the first to have a visual context and is the basic version of a more ambitious undertaking to come...

DANIEL STEADMAN

This "Revelation" was created for the charity "Changing Faces" as an example of a possible series that could make up a future collaborative project. The subject is geologist and artist Daniel Steadman who attends a Tuesday night drawing group with Graham.

THE ROBIN VERHEYEN QUARTET

Graham met Robin at his quartet's gig in Le Duc des Lombards in Paris and proposed this, his most complex "Revelation" to date. Here each member of the quartet "paints" his own part of the finished portrait with his playing. This required a detailed chart and tremendous persistence and concentration to achieve.

JOHN HANNAH

In his role as "Trevor" in the pilot for the film "Tea Shop Asylum". In the film John's character transforms from philosophy professor to suicidal depressive, and the "Revelation" reflects this transformation.

AFIA MALA

Afia is a Togolese singer and the mother of a friend of Graham. This "Revelation" is a bit of fun, featuring Afia singing "Si Vuelves Tu" from her recent album "Afia a Cuba" (Cantos music) and was created as a birthday gift from her daughter.

TONY JEFFRIES

This "Revelation" features Olympic bronze medalist Tony Jeffries and is set to his fight walk-on music. Graham converted the music into a chart which directed how he was to paint the portrait. The finished "Revelation" was played at a charity boxing event hosted by Tony in Sunderland's Rainton Meadows Arena.
